Image The Green Party wants a full and public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in Auckland, following the mercenary decision of a power company to cut off electricity providing life-supporting oxygen.

The Mangere woman, who was recently released from hospital, died shortly after the electricity was cut off despite pleas from her and her teenage son.

“Is there no social responsibility requirement? No code of conduct? Listening to the company spokesperson this morning, it would seem the company sees it as entirely the responsibility of the consumer to make contact, provide documentation and argue their right to be allowed to live,” says Green Party Social Development spokesperson Sue Bradford.

“Surely there is some flexibility to use compassion and common sense in this type of very rare situation?” Ms Bradford asks.

“The Minister of Finance and the Minister of State Owned Enterprises, the Government's shareholding ministers in Mercury’s parent company Mighty River Power, should be demanding answers, and insisting that the company take a good hard look at how it conducts business.

“Mighty River Power showed the biggest jump in earnings of all state energy companies last year, with profits jumping by $20 million to reach $74.6 million. Mercury Energy, its retail offshoot, increased customer numbers from 354,000 to 371,000 in the six months between October and March this year.

“Mercury Energy Spokesperson James Moulder did himself and the company no favours by putting the blame back on the family, and shrugging off responsibility to contractors.

“What's more, he seemed unable to give any assurances that the same thing wouldn’t happen again in similar circumstances.

“Things are looking very bleak for this country when companies will literally allow someone to die in the pursuit of profits,” Ms Bradford says.
