Image New moves by Auckland authorities to address climate change have been welcomed by Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons.

Today the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) announced extra buses and trains to and from the Bledisloe Cup match this Saturday, and yesterday Auckland City Council's (ACC’s) urban strategy and governance committee recommended the council adopt a plan of action for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“These small and tentative moves have potential to lead to bigger outcomes,” Ms Fitzsimons says. “If the ARTA, as a promotional exercise, can provide the use of more trains and buses at relatively cheap fares at rush hours to and from a Wallabies-All Blacks rugby game it will give commuters a taste of what could be done during week-day rush hours too.” The ARTA has publicised the weekend initiative as a way of encouraging public transport as an alternative to driving while the ACC committee suggestion of a carbon neutral future for Auckland has come as part of a plan that commits the council to cutting gas emissions such as carbon dioxide as well as reducing waste.

“Although the United States is not a signatory to the Kyoto agreement, moves such as are being mooted in Auckland are underway in quite a few North American cities and others around the world. I hope the ACC follows its committee’s recommendation and that Auckland becomes a role model here,” Ms Fitzsimons says.

“A large part of our greenhouse emissions are controlled or influenced by local government. They include building consents, waste management, water supply, sewage pumping, public transport, roading and more.

“Local government must be part of the solution in a community-focused response to climate change and I congratulate ARTA and ACC for these actions.”
