Carbon trading scheme adopts Green ideas, but too slowly
Written by Auckland Greens

Image It's great to see the Government has adopted so much of the Green Party’s climate change policy in its plan for a carbon trading scheme, but disappointing that it will take so long for any real action to happen, Green Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says.

“The Government seems to have taken several steps in the right direction, by finally acknowledging that such a scheme must cover all sectors of the economy, including agriculture and transport – this is a first.

“It is also a first for them to identify that the cost of emissions must be met by those who emit them.

“It is pleasing to see our suggestion that processing companies can take responsibility for emissions on behalf of farmers and suppliers is also on the table for discussion.

“Treasury must also be congratulated for finally acknowledging that over all placing a cost on carbon will have a negligible impact of the GDP.

Thursday, 03 May 2007
The proposed new electoral boundary changes have been announced. People are free to make submissions until June when the final lines will be drawn. Auckland has some significant changes, including the addition of a new electorate called Howick. Click this link to go to elections.org and type your address into the map to see where you may be in a few months! (Be warned, the interface is a bit tricky. Entering Auckland as your city gives you all the Auckland Roads in the country, regardless of your street name. It's best to just put your street name in and choose from the list.)

Kids win out over petty politics
Written by Sue Bradford

Image Today is a great day for New Zealand’s children, who will soon be afforded the same protection from violence that adults are, the Green Party says.

Both Labour and National put aside petty politics and have come together to support Sue Bradford’s Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Bill, following an amendment that assures parents that police have the discretion not to prosecute when very insignificant or inconsequential offences come to their attention.

“I am delighted that both major parties have put petty political point scoring to one side and come together to support an amendment to my bill which will allow the vast majority of MPs in Parliament to vote for it this evening. It looks as though the debate on the committee stages of my bill may well finish tonight, which means the final third reading will take place on 16 May, the day before the Budget is delivered.

“This new amendment, put forward by Peter Dunne and announced by Helen Clark and John Key this morning, gives parents the reassurance so many of them are looking for on the vexed issue of criminalisation,” Ms Bradford says.

“I hope the amendment means that some of the scaremongering around the fear that when my bill passes tens of thousands of ordinary parents will suddenly find themselves in court for lightly or occasionally smacking their children will be put to rest.
