Research buried by political interference

Image The Green Party is alarmed by reports of censorship of state funded research that appears to have become the victim of political interference.

“The lack of independence shown by the Families Commission in suddenly withdrawing support for this research after one of its authors used its findings as part of a submission to Parliament is very disturbing,” Social Development Spokesperson Sue Bradford says.

In an interview on National Radio this morning, Rotorua People’s Advocacy Centre’s Paul Blair described how the report, entitled 'Improving Work Life Balance for Domestic Purposes Beneficiaries Sole Parent Families', had been signed off, favourably peer reviewed and its publication assured. It suddenly became a political football after his use of an excerpt in a submission on the Social Security Amendment Bill.

“I find the direct political interference in the release of a finished, commissioned piece of research incredible, especially at a time when the research is particularly relevant to MPs debating a bill before Parliament.

Image The Green Party is outraged that Auckland City Council has chosen to protect its dividend from Metrowater by letting sewage flow into Auckland harbours for an additional six years.

"This is outrageous behaviour from the Council, and from the Treasury advisers who effectively gave a rationale for the decision. It demonstrates why Aucklanders should be very cautious about current proposals to amend legislation to allow Watercare to also pay dividends to shareholding councils,” Green Party Environment Spokesperson Nandor Tanczos says.

“One of the important elements of public ownership of companies is that the pressure to make profits for shareholders is mediated by other values. Infrastructural decisions should not be dominated by the desire for short term profit,” Nandor says.

Mercurys mercenary practices need urgent review

Wednesday, 30 May 2007

Image The Green Party wants a full and public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in Auckland, following the mercenary decision of a power company to cut off electricity providing life-supporting oxygen.

The Mangere woman, who was recently released from hospital, died shortly after the electricity was cut off despite pleas from her and her teenage son.

“Is there no social responsibility requirement? No code of conduct? Listening to the company spokesperson this morning, it would seem the company sees it as entirely the responsibility of the consumer to make contact, provide documentation and argue their right to be allowed to live,” says Green Party Social Development spokesperson Sue Bradford.
