MMP Parties lay conduct challenge - Multi-Party Media Release

Image MPs from Parliament’s MMP Parties have united to sign a voluntary Code of Conduct and are strongly urging others to follow suit.

At a special press conference today, 13 MPs – from the Green Party, the Maori Party, United Future and ACT New Zealand – came together to collectively sign the Code.

The move follows a joint letter in March to Speaker Margaret Wilson from the leaders of these Parties, expressing concern that the behaviour of some MPs in the House creates a poor environment for political debate.

Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said that the Code of Conduct goes further than just behaviour in the House, covering much wider ethical considerations, which stress MPs responsibility to the public good rather than personal interests.

“We believe a code will help MPs carry out their duties and help the public have confidence in their Parliamentary representative,” she said.

Threatened dolphins need Government sanctuary

The Green Party has welcomed the proposal from Forest and Bird to establish a marine mammal sanctuary along the west coast of the North Island to protect the critically endangered Maui dolphin, and is calling on the Government to urgently back the proposal.

"We believe that activities like set netting and seabed mining should not be allowed within the habitats of endangered species. For these dolphins, set netting and trawling pose the most significant threats and such activities should be banned within the habitat of the Maui,” the Greens’ Conservation Spokesperson Metiria Turei says.

West Auckland hosts "An Inconvenient Truth"
Written by Jason Sanders

West Auckland put on "An Inconvenient Truth" at Laingholm Community Hall on 7th June.  It was a cold and wet night, and there was a massive parent meeting across the road at the local Primary, so there were not as many people in the audience as we would have wished.  Only about 23.  However the giant screen we had up, the good quality sound and picture, plus the intimate number made for a great night. We signed up 2 new members.

Ben Bell, who works for the Sustainable Living Centre in New Lynn, gave a short introductory talk, and fielded questions afterwards.  He proved to be a mine of information, including that Al Gore's power point presentation is probably the best there is on the subject, but there's the anomaly of his having a 20 bedroom mansion with a massive power bill each month.

It was a great discussion afterwards, Ben telling us that there is no way we are going to be able to consume our way out of Climate Change, that an essential part of the equation will be living more simply, recycling, and doing things smarter; not just seeking high tech answers.  I offered the analogy of how when the Americans first ventured into space they found they couldn't use pens in zero gravity.  So they spent 10 million dollars inventing a pen that would work up there.  The Russians simply used pencils!
